The glass that doesn’t roll down

Your vehicle has more glass panels than most people realise until one of them breaks. The door windows get most of the attention because they move, but the fixed panels around them (the small triangular piece at the front corner of the door, the quarter window tucked between the rear door and the C-pillar, the wide cargo glass on the sides of an SUV or minivan) are just as structural and just as important to your vehicle’s weathersealing and security.

These panels go by a few different names depending on where they sit. Vent windows are the small triangular fixed panes at the front corners of front doors, where the door frame meets the A-pillar. Quarter glass sits at the C or D pillar, typically behind the rear door on sedans and SUVs. Cargo glass covers the rear side openings on SUVs, minivans, and cargo vans, sometimes as a single large panel and sometimes in sections that include a small hinged or sliding vent piece.

Most of this glass is tempered. When it’s struck hard enough, it shatters into the small, blunt fragments that tempered glass produces by design. That’s better than sharp shards in an impact, but it means the full panel needs replacing. There’s no partial option. There’s no repair equivalent for tempered side glass.

Break-ins and what comes with them

Break-ins are one of the most common reasons people call us about side glass. A smashed quarter window or vent glass is a quick, easy target for someone wanting vehicle access, and the result is a shattered panel, glass on the seat and floor, and an open vehicle that can’t be left unattended.

We handle break-in damage regularly. The job is more than just installing new glass. We remove all remaining glass fragments from the channel and surrounding area (pieces work their way into the door seal, the weatherstripping, and the floor), clean and prepare the frame, and install the new panel. We’ll also tell you honestly if we notice signs of damage to the frame or the surrounding trim that should be addressed.

If the break-in has just happened, report it to the police and get a file number before you call us. Your insurer may require one to process the claim. Don’t drive with a missing side panel if you can help it. Weather gets in quickly, and loose glass in the vehicle is a hazard. We can arrange a temporary cover for the opening to let you move the vehicle safely if needed.

Mobile service for side glass

Most fixed side glass replacement is well-suited to mobile service. There’s no extended adhesive cure time in most cases; the panels clip or bond into position and the vehicle is ready to drive as soon as the work is complete. That makes it practical to come to you, whether that’s your home, your workplace, or wherever the vehicle is parked.

We need a level, reasonably sheltered space and enough room to work around the vehicle. Covered parking is ideal but not always necessary; side glass replacement is faster and less weather-dependent than a windshield install. We’ll confirm what’s needed for your specific vehicle when you book.

Mobile service covers Langley, Surrey, Cloverdale, Walnut Grove, Willoughby, Aldergrove, Murrayville, and surrounding communities. If you’re outside our usual range, call and ask. We cover more ground than our standard service area list suggests.

ICBC and how the claim works

Side glass is covered under ICBC Comprehensive in the same way as any other auto glass panel. The covered events include break-ins, road debris, hail, and other insured perils. We’re part of the ICBC Repair Network, so we manage the process from our end: coverage check, authorisation, glass order, installation, and direct billing to ICBC.

You won’t lose your claims-rated scale standing over a Comprehensive glass claim. That’s specific to glass; it’s one of the more useful features of ICBC Comprehensive that many drivers don’t know about until they need it.

Standard deductibles apply. If your deductible is $300 and the replacement cost for your specific panel is lower than that, it often makes more sense to pay directly rather than file a claim. We’ll work through the numbers with you before anything is ordered.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

Don't see your question? Give us a call. We're happy to walk you through your specific situation.

  • What counts as 'side glass'? Is this different from door glass?

Yes. Door glass is the large, moving window that rolls up and down inside your door panel. Side glass, as we define it, refers to the fixed panels that don't move: the small triangular vent window at the front corner of a door, the quarter glass at the C or D pillar behind the rear door, and the cargo glass on the rear sides of SUVs, vans, and minivans. These are all separate pieces from the door window, bonded or clipped into the body. If your rolling door window has come off its track or the glass is broken, that's covered under our door glass replacement service.

  • Is side glass replacement covered by ICBC?

Yes, if the damage is from a covered event (a break-in, road debris, hail, or another insured peril) and you carry ICBC Comprehensive coverage. We're an ICBC Repair Network shop and handle the claim directly on your behalf. Coverage check, authorisation, and billing all happen on our end. Standard ICBC deductibles apply ($300, $500, or $1,000 depending on your policy), and glass claims under Comprehensive don't affect your claims-rated scale.

  • My car was broken into and a side window was smashed. What should I do?

First, if the break-in has just happened, report it to the police and get a file number, as your insurer may ask for it. Don't drive the vehicle if there's glass on the seat or if the missing window compromises your visibility or safety. Call us and we'll get you on the schedule. We'll cover the opening temporarily if you need to move the vehicle before the appointment. At the appointment, we remove all remaining glass from the frame, clean the channel or bonding surface, install the new panel, and verify the fit before we're done.

  • How long does side window replacement take, and can I wait with the vehicle?

Most fixed side glass replacements take 30–60 minutes. Unlike a windshield, most quarter glass and vent windows clip, channel, or bond into position without the extended urethane cure time that a windshield requires, so you can typically drive away as soon as the work is complete. We'll confirm the specific process and timing for your vehicle when you book, since the installation method varies by make, model, and panel location.
