What ICBC actually covers (and what it doesn't)

The glass-claim part of ICBC has more nuance than most drivers realize. Here's the plain-language version.

Comprehensive coverage

If you carry Comprehensive on your ICBC policy, glass damage is covered, full stop. This includes rock chip repair (covered with no deductible, meaning $0 out of pocket) and windshield replacement (covered under Comprehensive, with your deductible applied — typically $300, $500, or $1,000 depending on your policy).

Deductibles and how they work for glass

ICBC Comprehensive deductibles are typically $300, $500, or $1,000. The deductible is what you pay if the work exceeds the deductible amount. For rock chip repair, the deductible doesn't apply. Repair is free. For windshield replacement, if the cost is $400 and your deductible is $300, you pay $300, ICBC pays $100. If the cost is $1,200 and your deductible is $300, you pay $300, ICBC pays $900.

What's not covered

Basic-only ICBC policies (sometimes called "Liability Only") do not cover glass damage. Damage caused intentionally by the owner is not covered. Damage from manufacturer defect (rare on a windshield) is handled by the vehicle's warranty, not insurance.

Will my premium go up?

Glass claims under Comprehensive do not affect your claims-rated scale (the rate factor that determines your premium). They're a separate category from at-fault collision claims. Filing a glass claim does not raise your insurance.

The Glass Express program

ICBC's Glass Express program authorizes specific shops (like Snowline) to handle glass claims directly with ICBC, without requiring you to file the claim yourself. As a Repair Network shop, we have access to the Glass Express system, which is why our claim turnaround is so fast, usually 10–20 minutes from arrival to authorization.

FAQ

ICBC claims questions, answered

Don't see your question? Give us a call. We're happy to walk you through your specific situation.

  • Do I need to call ICBC before bringing my vehicle to Snowline?

No. As an ICBC Repair Network shop, we open the claim on your behalf. Bring your driver's licence and vehicle. We handle the call, photograph the damage, get authorization, and complete the work. You'll sign one form acknowledging the work was completed.

  • Will my ICBC premium go up if I file a glass claim?

Glass-only claims under Comprehensive coverage do not affect your claims-rated scale (the rate factor that determines your premium). They're treated separately from at-fault collision claims. Your premium is unaffected by glass claims.

  • How do I know if I have ICBC Comprehensive coverage?

Check your ICBC insurance certificate (the slip you keep with your vehicle). Comprehensive is listed as a coverage line, typically labelled Comprehensive or 'Comp' with a deductible amount ($300, $500, $1000 are common). If you have Basic-only coverage (sometimes called 'Liability Only'), glass damage is not covered. We can verify your coverage when you call.

  • What's the difference between rock chip repair and replacement under ICBC?

Rock chip repair is typically covered with no deductible (meaning $0 out of pocket) under ICBC's Glass Express program. Windshield replacement is also covered under Comprehensive, but your deductible applies. For example, on an ADAS-equipped vehicle where the job costs $899: with a $300 deductible you pay $300 and ICBC covers the rest; with a $1,000 deductible the full amount is out of pocket. We confirm your coverage and quote your specific vehicle before anything is ordered.

  • How long does the ICBC claim process take at Snowline?

From the moment you arrive to the moment authorization is in place: typically 15–30 minutes. We photograph the damage, submit it to ICBC's claim system, and wait for authorization to come back. Once authorized, we order the glass and book your install, often the same day or next day depending on availability from our distributors.

  • What if I have private insurance through TAG, BCAA, or Family Insurance?

We work with all major BC private insurers. For TAG Network, BCAA, and Family Insurance we can typically direct-bill the claim. For other private insurers we provide complete documentation and you submit for reimbursement. We'll walk you through the process if it's your first time. Bring your insurance details when you arrive.

  • Can I use ICBC for a windshield replacement on a leased vehicle?

Yes. ICBC Comprehensive coverage applies regardless of whether you own or lease the vehicle. The only difference: leased vehicles often have lease-language requiring OEM glass. If your lease specifies OEM, let us know and we'll use OEM glass. There may be a small upcharge depending on coverage.

  • What documents do I need to bring?

Just your BC driver's licence and the vehicle. We pull insurance details from the ICBC system once we have your name. If you're filing on someone else's behalf (for a family member, a fleet vehicle, or a leased vehicle), we may need the registered owner's authorization, which we can usually arrange by phone in a few minutes.
